Mrs. Elsie Mae Elnora Newans

Elsie May Elnora Newans (Nee Jordan) passed away peacefully on September 17, 2023 in the High River Hospital. Elsie is fondly remembered by many, as her passion for helping others, being nurturing, caring, relentlessly faithful and her enduring belief in those of us fortunate enough to be part of her life, have marked every relationship in her life. Elsie also had a quick wit and a keen sense of humor! Elsie loved and coveted being an aunt/sister/mother/grandmother/great-grandmother/friend and confidant. If you ever wanted to see pride in someone’s face…all you needed to do was to mention any of those, and the room would be lit up, as she beamed, and the stories started to flow. With her passing, Elsie leaves a family that so greatly admired and who cherish every memory: son Hal and his wife Karen, grandsons Mikael and Bradley (Mariah and soon to be great-granddaughter), daughter Roanne, granddaughter Taylor and significant other Tom (great-grandson Owen, great-granddaughter Lilly and Oliver), grandson Justin, son Jordan and his wife Elsa, grandson Cashe, granddaughters Daniella and Eliza, brother-in-law Bud Sherrow, and numerous nieces, nephews and their families. Born in 1936, in Goodwater, Saskatchewan, Elsie was born into a large, dynamic, busy family that embodied the true spirit of community and family. Elsie was predeceased by her mother and father, Ada and William Jordan, brothers Paul, Ab (Ruth), Nob (Karen) and Wray (Tess) and sisters Thelma (Philip), Dot (Lloyd,Hjalmer), Marlene and Maisie (Frankie), husband Harold Matthies, and husband Roy Newans. Elsie worked as a beautician/hairdresser in Calgary, owning the salon in the Calgary General Hospital, followed by a shop in the Knights of Columbus, Columbus Manor, once the old General Hospital was torn down. Aside from her work, Elsie was a dedicated baker and cook. Mondays when the shop was closed, you could smell the aroma of fresh baked bread and buns, and other heavenly baked goods, wafting from her kitchen. Christmastime was also an amazing time to be around, as the special baked goods and other treats were a staple. Outside of work, Elsie loved to volunteer on the second floor of the High River Hospital and was a firm believer and member of Al-anon, where many lifelong friendships were made. ONE DAY AT A TIME! A Celebration of Elsie’s life was held at the High River United Church - 123 Macleod Trail, High River Alberta, at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 21st, 2023, with the Reverend David Robertson officiating. Any flower dedications should be sent to the church, address above, and flowers will be donated after the service.
