It is with sadness & grief that we announce the death of Barbara Pauline Wiersma of Nanton, Alberta on November 18, 2018. Barbara Pauline died peacefully at the Foothills Country Hospice in Okotoks. Barbara Pauline was born to Cornelius & Diena Hykoop at Claresholm, Alberta. She was raised on a farm in the Granum area and went to the Ballquitter Country School and then to the Granum Public School. She graduated there in Grade 12 with honours. Pauline attended Mt. Royal College in Calgary taking business and secretarial training, graduating “Summa Cum Laude”. Pauline was employed by the City of Calgary as secretary to Calgary Planning Department. While there she met and married Peter James Wiersma, a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, on December 28, 1955. Together they moved to Vancouver, B.C. where he had been posted. Pauline was employed by the Board of Governor – Canadian Wheat Board Grain Exchange. Pauline and Jim moved back to Calgary in February, 1957 where he was now employed as a Constable with the Calgary Police Service. Pauline became secretary to the manager of Lenox Industries Canadian Division in Calgary as well as a clerk for the Court of Queens Bench. On November 18, 1966 Pauline was blessed with her own family, giving birth to Christopher Dean and again on December 20, 1969 to son Peter Jan. Pauline was an excellent mother & taught well. She was a very good loving & proud mother. Pauline was an excellent cook and her Christmas dinners were her specialty. She was a quilter, gardener, lover of nature along with many other talents, too numerous to mention. Pauline was a devoted parent and wife. She cherished her children and grandchild. She treasured every moment of celebration or sorrow with them. She was a long time member of the United Church Women society in Nanton, AB; always assisting, helping and touching the hearts of those she loved with compassion. She loved her Church family very deeply. Pauline was a founding member of the Nanton United Church Farmers Market. Pauline was predeceased by her parents Cornelius & Diena Hykoop and her brother James Cordell Hykoop of Langley, B.C. She will rest in the columbarium at the Nanton Cemetery.
