Emerson Lucy Malmberg

Miss Emerson Malmberg of High River, Alberta passed away at the Flames Rotary House on May 20, 2024 at the age of 16 years. Emerson is survived by her parents Scott and Chelsea Malmberg; brother Marshall; Grandparents Ken Malmberg, Deb Malmberg and Suzanne Roy. Aunts, uncles, cousins and second cousins. She was predeceased by her Papa Pat Roy, cousin Mitchell Malmberg, Auntie Shannon Stewart and Great Grandma Lucy Malmberg among others. Emerson was born in Calgary, Alberta and after a short stint at the Foothills Hospital was brought home to her brother Marshall and her family’s new home in High River. She was a quiet baby who was happy to be held and show off her sweet smile. Then she turned one. She gained her walking stride, voice and independence quickly. From that day forward she knew exactly what she needed and just how she was going to get it. Emerson spent every Thursday visiting her namesake Great Grandma Lucy at the Manor, and the rest of the week making friends at the Parent Link Centre and various playgroups and play dates around High River. She attended Kids Are Special and Holy Spirit Academy for elementary school, where she made many lasting friendships. She loved to sing, and make art, one of her pieces “Stella Luna” was featured on 12th Avenue in 2016 for the High River Banner Project. Emerson dabbled in many activities; gymnastics, dance, soccer, fast pitch, and skiing, but her biggest loves were always her friends and her pets. Jones, Townes and recently Libby. Emerson was not afraid to try new things, and loved to travel the world alongside her brother. She drove across 8 States, and visited Mexico and the Dominican Republic. She loved music festivals, camping, attending different camps around Alberta and treasured her road trips with dad to learn more about the things he loves. She learnt Spanish at home and sang and danced often. Em decided around the age of 10 that Grandpa Ken was her best friend and loved seeing him everyday. In her teenage years Em attended NDC and moved to Highwood High School in Grade 9. She enjoyed shopping with friends (including a shopping spree from Make-A-Wish), eating out and snuggling up with her family and watching movies. She turned 16 in the hospital, but booked her driver’s test on the ride home. She got her first car, a VW Beetle and put in about as many kms a girl could in the time she had. She loved driving with her friends, going for coffee, pie or DQ with dad and mom, and spending time in George Lane Park. Emerson was most known for her sense of humour, and ability to bring joy to any room she was in. She loved to be silly, and make people laugh. Emerson’s cancer diagnosis came in December of 2022 and her life quickly turned to surgeries, treatments, making plans and eating everything she wanted. She did 6 rounds of intense chemo therapy and earned a “new birthday” on June 20th after a stem cell transplant and 7th high dose round of chemo. She came home eager to find her way back to the ocean, get a job and throw some banger parties with her friends. She volunteered when she could at the Manor in High River during her treatments, and later got her first real job at Dairy Queen. Emerson did everything meticulously and with intention. At just 16, she handled most every situation with grace and wisdom, and a few curse words. She loved her family deeply, and her friends almost as much. She will be incredibly missed by her entire community, her family and those who knew her best. While Emerson’s rare form of cancer entered our lives, we were profoundly grateful for the Small Cell Ovarian Cancer Foundation who quickly connected us with the most experienced doctors with this disease.
