Mr. Kenneth Ronald Starke

Ken grew up on a farm just outside of Cayley. He was the youngest of five children: Judy (Steve Anderson), David, Larry (Sandra). He was predeceased by his mother, father, and sister Bonnie. Ken met and married Marj in 1978. Together they built a life centered on family and friendship. They were blessed with two children, Jeff (Shannalee) and Cory (Greg Mackillop), and three grandsons, Layne, Davin, and Daxtyn. Throughout his life, Ken held many jobs. From driving a mixer truck for H.R. Concrete to selling vehicles at Country Chrysler. He did well in sales as his honesty, personality, and genuine care for people earned him many repeat customers and lasting friendships. His dream job came when he purchased his red Kenworth and went to drive for French Livestock. He spent many years hauling fat cattle into Cargill and took great pride in maintaining "Big Red," spending countless hours washing and polishing his truck. In 2006, Ken and Marj purchased a run-down greenhouse business in Pincher Creek. Although it meant leaving the High River community, they embraced the challenge together. Working side by side for 13 years, they transformed the business and made many lifelong friends through the greenhouse and the Pincher Creek community. Many a laugh was shared in the lunchroom, as Ken was the only man among 14 women. When Ken turned 60, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia. The diagnosis led to the sale of the business and a move to Nanton so he could be closer to family. Family was always at the center of Ken's life. His extended family included the High River Fire Department, where he volunteered for 25 years. He treasured the friendships and many great memories made during his years of service alongside his fellow members. Ken spent the last three years of his life at Vulcan Extendicare. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff for the care and compassion they showed Ken, and to all those who took the time to visit him. A devoted husband of 48 years, loving father, proud grandfather, and loyal friend, Ken will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Ken was also an animal lover and shared his life with many cats and dogs over the years. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to an animal shelter or a food bank in his memory. A Celebration of Ken’s Life will be held on Sunday, June 21st from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Munro Barn at Sheppard Family Park in High River.
